I find this particularly offensive.and I really don’t give a shit who I piss off saying that. This sort of narrow minded attitude is what helps keep racism alive and well. Not every white person is responsible for slavery. Not every white person comes from a family whose ancestors owned slaves. My family, for one, hasn’t been in the US for more than two generations
Other races have suffered atrocities just as great as slavery starting with the Native Americans followed by the Jews. I have never had a Jewish person come up to me and expect me to apologize for the acts of my ancestors.
Black History Month is about celebrating your history and heritage not about throwing slavery in face of every white person because you assume we are all responsible. There isn’t a white person alive who isn’t aware that slavery happened. We are very well aware of it. We are taught about it in school. We have it shoved down our throats with bullshit like this. I will not be made to feel guilty about it because my family, my ancestors had nothing to do with it.
It’s time to get rid of this myopic view of all white people. Blaming every one of us for slavery doesn’t help your case and makes you no better than the racist white people out there.
This is why I hate Black History Month. I have to put up with this shit for an entire month.
WOW and to think. we have to put up with YOUR SHIT all year.
I’m not saying that the sketch was CORRECT as black americans are quite knowlegable to the fact that ALL WHITE PEOPLE did not contribute to slavery. BUT, to be told BY WHITE PEOPLE how to feel, instead of being understood? This is why there is anger. Instead of feeling like you are being blamed and you have to fight back, why don’t you try to ASK us why we’re angry. Sure you learned about slavery and jim crow and all that “shit” in school, but my ancestors lived it. I find it so interesting that Holocaust survivors are given pats on the backs and sad eyes while we’re shamed for our anger from never getting reparations FOR THE SHIT our ancestors experienced. Please. Sit down.
Native Americans and Blacks (which were American Genocide) are a bit different from Jewish People. In my opinion, they have been able to reclaim their wealth. I’m WELL AWARE that the atrocities that they experienced will NEVER be made up for, but think about it this way: Native Americans and Blacks are STILL suffering. We were stripped of our land and our culture. Native Americans are one of, if not THE smallest race when they use to be THRIVING. Blacks, formerly known as AFRICANS are still without identity and without culture in some cases as we have to trace our roots as well as we can considering WE WERE STRIPPED OF ALL THE THING THAT MADE US US! And we are talking DECADES of this kind of cultural bleaching. SO YES, it’s a SORE SPOT.
And don’t you dare say that because we have a Black President, 40 acres and a mule and THE SHORTEST MONTH OF THE YEAR TO CELEBRATE BEING WHO WE ARE, things are better now. They’re not. RACISM exist because of closeminded, insensitive people like YOU. GET IT RIGHT.
I just got everything I needed from Ally’s response. Couldn’t have said it better myself!
